With Valentine's Day coming up, and all the cards and warm wishes beginning to float around, we thought it would be a nice idea to share a little of that love with the birds!
After the long months of winter, and still a while yet until we see the first few bits of green begin to creep out, the birds where we live could definitely use a little pick-me-up. We thought this peanut butter and birdseed covered pine cone heart would do just the trick! As simple as the ingredients in it, this wreath can be wired together with whatever you have around the house (although coated wire is easier for little hands to work with), and be outside your window in no time!
Start by winding the wire around the pine cones. It might be easier to wire them to each other one by one, and then run a little wire over the whole shape to reinforce the wreath. Then just coat it in peanut butter, cover with lots of birdseed, and tie a ribbon to the top for hanging. {Please note: The peanut butter used on this project was organic and was not on the list of recalled peanut products. Please check your sources of peanut butter carefully before using, as our little ones, both human and bird, are subject to Salmonella. There are still many safe sources of peanut butter available.}
Our "heart" pulled out a little when we hung it up because the wire we had was a bit thin, but we don't think the birds will mind...
If you would like to identify the birds that come to visit your "heart," you can find a great book about backyard birds here, and some great binoculars here.
