Grass is late in arriving due to the drought during the winter. Without the recent rain, the native grass would still be dormant. I am just starting to graze the sheep and it's mid May. Last year at this time they had already been grazing for quite a while. We start slowly, 15 minutes at a time, and build up to all day depending on the grass conditions. Sheep are thought to over-graze pastures, but ours graze with the horses who protect them from the coyotes and keep them moving so that they can't. This is Mistletoe's first experience with the herd and grazing. The first access to grass makes his introduction to the herd go smoothly they are all too busy eating to notice him!!
His mom takes him off to start teaching what is good to eat and what is not.
Nelly the goat eats everything!!!
