The Western Boreal Toad went down into the earth for the winter on September 7. The fall Woolly Caterpillar's band was fairly thick. There is not a mouse nor a snake in sight. Prairie Dogs are carrying mouths full of sage and grass into their burrows and it's not breading season yet , that's two months away...
... now there is a hard frost and arctic air, temperatures at night in the teens, a first in recorded history for this time of year. I wonder if they all knew winter was coming early?
The wild sunflower pods, still full, helped the finches through the night.
The sheep have thick woolly coats, tucking their legs under them when they lay down. Blankets and an extra meal at 5am helped the horses through...
... and the wild hares are loving the black rubber tires as they soak up the morning light. I think they all knew, and maybe I did too, we got the barn ready for winter early this year, the hay barn is full and all the horse blankets were clean and ready to go so....
