There are a lot of artists in my family, so our family farm can sometimes double as a resting place for sculptures and other artworks...
... including a certain abandoned bath tub. Chipping avocado paint from the 60's or 70's peels away from the outer shell, while intricate rust stains decorate the interior with swirls of burnt orange magic. This old bathtub is my favorite leftover from our assortment of sculpture materials, which is why I have wanted to re-purpose it into a garden planter for some time now.
A few years of good intentions have come and gone and still the tub sits empty... well at least that's what I thought. It would appear that the bath tub got tired of waiting, or maybe it was mother nature. Either way, new life has found a home by way of a drain opening...
This site is nothing new that is for sure. There are many photos of life persisting through the cracks of concrete slabs, and lone flowers surrounded by immense desert, but this particular plant struck me as rather clever. Water in this area is plentiful, and other plants strive towards the sun in close proximity, but I would argue that this little fellow chose wisely...
You see the tub works as a shelter against the wind and heat of the sun, as well as what it is supposed to do, hold water, which has to go through the plant to exit the tub. Clever little plant indeed, and quite happy from the looks of it too.
I don't think filling this old vessel with dirt would do it justice anymore. This bathtub was clearly meant to carry on its intended use... as a work of art.
To unexpected art, and clever little plants...
