I traveled to New York City to visit the toy fair, galleries, museums, neighborhood bookstores and toy stores to see and feel the activity of the coming year from a New York City point of view. My favorite part of the visit was a day with my son. It was a cold, gray day with a bite in the wind. We were exploring the part of the city just above the financial district on the lower west side up through the village. I just love the old buildings with the unexpected gardens gracing their roof tops...
... the old cobblestone street that has been there since the beginnings of the city, leading us to our next discovery, amazingly devoid of human life on a Saturday morning...

... the farmers market in the village where many of the wonderful restaurants find the source of their creativity. This weekend it was root vegetables in all their glory. They were also selling slabs of cedar to keep the moths away. It smelled rich and of the forest.
One of my favorite sights in New York City, are its wooden water towers, you can find them throughout the city on many of the original old buildings and also on the newest skyscrapers. They are like old wine barrel hot tubs, they will leak when new for several days until the wood swells sealing it forever. New technology has yet to replace them... what a wonder!
Branches full of buds were being sold, waiting to be taken home and placed in water to force an early display of spring. Isn't it just around the corner?
I arrived home to our first sign of spring here in Colorado, the horses had just started shedding out their winter coats. The ground was still covered with snow and it was cold but the light was telling them something different.
To spring even through it may be further around the corner then we think.
