There is definitely a chilly bite in the air these days, especially in the mornings, yes indeed, fall is here. Each morning I look outside it looks as if the birds are getting puffier and puffier in an attempt to stay warm. Fluttering back and forth I can see the preparations for winter taking place, with food gathering and storage at the top of the list.
Which is why I thought it might be a good idea to add to the ever growing bird feeder collection on Bryn Du Farm and help the little guys out. Luckily, Amanda Soule over at Soule Mama has a delightful little DIY bird feeder activity in her latest book, The Rhythm of Family, so I gave it a try.
This project could not have been easier, and it was loads of fun. From wandering through the woods to find just the right branch, to working with power tools and loved ones, to mixing up some lovely peanut butter mush for the birds (also from The Rhythm of Family) what a great way to spend the afternoon!
After the drilling was done, I simply filled the holes we made with the food and looked for just the right branch to hang it from.
Once I found the right tree my work was done, well if you can actually call it work. It's no secret we love our feathered friends on Bryn Du Farm. Over the years we have made lots of yummy treats including peanut butter pine cones and bird cookies, as well as cozy bird houses, so this sweet little project was a welcome addition. Not only is it easy, but it is great to do with little ones. Just make sure you let them pick out the stick...
... winter will be here before we know it, so make sure the backyard birds in your life are fat and happy!
