In the dead of winter, with not a blade of green grass in sight, our herd is just getting by. It's hard to get along when their grazing does not keep them occupied. I spread bits of hay through out the paddock when they are first let out of the barn. This seems to get everyone started off on the right foot. Flo loves to roll, nothing feels better when just getting let out.
Sky is our lead mare, she watches over everyone, tells them where to go and what they can do, and is sometimes the cause of their disagreements. The other two mares do not always follow her lead.
Abby and Flo are half sisters, they will try to eat from each others pile of hay, this usually does not last long and one or the other will lay their ears back and chase the other off.
The one calming influence on the our herd of mares is Merry Legs, she is small but mighty and when she is out with them, they all behave. They forget about their disagreements while wondering what she is up to, and what she will do next. Do you see how peaceful it is when she is present?
To the small and mighty!
