Summer Adventure Log

• Materials
• Paper
• Scrap fabric
• Needle and thread (preferably something strong)
• White glue
• Cardboard (like the back of a drawing pad)
• String

Following the same method we used for our handmade book project, I updated this Adventure Log to include an absolute necessity for explorers: fold out map pages!

To do this I folded the extra pages so that one side stuck out a bit more than the other (see image above).  I chose to use a contrasting color so that they would be easy to find.  Once you have your block of paper, insert as many of the fold out pages as you would like, making sure to have the folded in part on the top and all of the facing the same direction (you only want the section with a single layer to be in the binding).

Now that your map pages are in, you can finish the binding in just the same fashion as the simple cloth bound book tutorial.

 

All that's left to do now, is get out there and explore!

 

With the Kids: Have them help you pick out the fabric and the paper for their adventure logs Ask them to pick out the size and shape they would like, and whether there are any special additions they are interested in including Invite them to help you sew and glue the book (or to do it on their own if they are a bit older) Make plans for adventures in the pages. Use the log to record plant and animal sightings. Draw real and imaginary maps on the spacial map pages. Write stories about real or fictional events and turn them into plays to perform for siblings or friends. Use the log to record ideas for inventions (great explorers often make their own tools and navigational aids) Design and draw pictures of flags for the imaginary lands you visit.
