After many looks through Charles Harper's Birds & Words I thought it would be fun to explore his process, or his style rather.
What is so great about this artist's work is its ability to tell so much about its subject with so little. When you break it down, it really is just simple shapes, added together to bring each bird to life. So I took one of my favorite materials, Japanese Silk Paper, cut out a bunch of circles, triangles, and half moons. . .
. . . and started assembling a beautiful bird. Now I know. . .
. . . this is nothing compared to what Charley Harper came up with, but it was a fun craft that allowed for a lot of investigation and experimentation.
This would be a great activity to do along with reading the book. Or for exploring the avian population in your neighborhood. It's also good practice for learning shapes, colors, and even some scissor skills. You could even include the habitat in your collages!
But enough about art and birds, it's almost time to announce the winner of the Charles Harper's Birds & Words book giveaway. . .
... And the winner is Kelly who wrote:
"Charley Harper was amazing. I was fortunate see an art exhibit featuring his work at a nearby museum. It was a most inspiring collection of works. This book would be happy in our home :)"
Thank you to everyone who participated!
