When you were a kid (or maybe you are a kid reading this) did you ever just want something so badly you were willing to do anything, to solve any problem, to change any bad habit to make it happen?
So let me ask you this: if your mom had said "no to a pet bird, no to a bunny, and no, no, no to a trained seal", and then stipulated that you could get a pet if it didn't need to be walked, bathed, or fed, what would you get?
Sparky, that's what you would get. Sparky isn't just the sweetest illustrated sloth that ever was, he is a symbol of ingenuity, of careful research, and most of all, perseverance.
As a story, Sparky is everything you want in a picture book. Filled with intelligent and witty writing, along with lovely watercolor illustrations, it's easy to pick up this book again and again.
I honestly laugh every time I open this book. The combination of the protagonist and Sparky is beyond sweet. The way Sparky's owner is so happy to simply have a pet melts my heart, but Jenny Offill (the Author) doesn't let it get sappy. The story is as real as it can be. Leaving pretense to the wayside, and instead filling the space with pure, unaffected joy.
